February 1, 2011: KVH to Open Second Tokyo Data Center on February 1, 2011 – New Hub for Financial and Cloud Services in Japan

Press Release: February 1, 2011

KVH Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Chief Executive Officer: Richard Warley; “KVH”) has completed construction of the first building of Tokyo Data Center 2 (TDC2), KVH’s second data center in the Tokyo vicinity, and this facility is now operational. This new data center is located in Inzai city which is midway between Tokyo city center and Narita airport in Chiba Prefecture.

KVH TDC2 adds 4,000 net square meters of IT rack space to KVH’s data center capacity in Tokyo and will effectively address the increasing need for high-specification turn-key and colocation data center space for corporations demanding high power and cooling capacity. With approximately 30,000 square meters of land available on the Inzai property for future expansion, KVH will be able to support up to 16,000 net square meters of IT rack capacity when the location is fully built out.

“The opening of TDC2 is a big step forward in securing the future of Tokyo as a regional hub for both the Financial Services and Cloud Services Industries and it is also an important new component of our Information Delivery Platform,” commented Richard Warley, CEO of KVH. “With the capability to support high density racks ranging from 6kW racks as standard up to 20kW if required, TDC2 offers businesses in Japan, for the first time, access to a high density data center environment. This is the first of four data centers that we anticipate building on this site which will allow us to develop this location into a major hub for the Financial and Cloud Services Industries. In addition, with a PUE of less than 1.5, TDC2 offers a new benchmark in energy efficiency in the Tokyo area which will help reduce both the energy bills and also the carbon footprint of our clients. We hope that it will also act as a benchmark that other operators will aspire to match so that, as an industry, we can continue to work to reduce our impact on the environment. Finally, we have installed the most advanced seismic installation equipment available and, as a consequence, TDC2 is now one of the safest buildings in Japan with a PML rating of 2.6% which offers unparalleled protection in the event of major seismic activity.”

KVH TDC2 is ideal for enterprise customers that require high power densities and cooling capabilities with efficiency and resilience. The data center’s features include:

  • Dedicated server halls or colocation racks supplied with a minimum of 1.8 kW per square meter of critical load across the server room floor

  • Highly efficient cooling system to support high density solutions with up to 6 kW per rack standard and 20 kW per rack with supplemental cooling

  • Power via diverse routes to each server room, with Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) in either 2N or block-redundant configurations and compartmentalized by floor

  • Floor loading capability of 850 kg per square meter on the raised floor, 1000 kg per square meter on the slab to support the weight of heavy racks and large equipment

  • High resilience – with its seismic isolation system and favorable location, the facility has a very low Probable Maximum Loss (PML) of 3.6%, one of the lowest of any building in Japan

In addition to market leading specifications for data centers, KVH TDC2 also incorporates the latest “green IT” technologies and design features to maximize efficiency and reduce overall power consumption of the facility. Through a variety of energy efficient design elements, KVH TDC2 will be able to achieve an annual average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of less than 1.5, far exceeding the industry standard of 2.0. Ahead of its opening, the data center has received a grant for the Installation of High Efficiency and Environmentally Friendly Heat Rejection Systems implemented by the Tokyo Electric Power Company in recognition of the excellent energy efficiency of the facility.
